The Carlisle Open & Pennsylvania State Collegiate Championship and the Pennsylvania State Scholastic Championships took place on March 6 & 7.  The Amity Chess Club was well represented this year and performed well (as always).  Congratulations to all that participated in this years tournament.  Joe Mucerino and Peter Minear placed 1st and 2nd, respectively.  They will be going over their games at chess club on Friday March 12 for those that are interested.

Below is a note from Peter Minear (2008 PA State Champion) about the tournament:

Dear Chess Fan(s),

In case you didn't know this already, several Amity Chess club members traveled to Carlisle this past weekend to participate in what is likely the largest annual non-Bill-Goichberg-related chess event in Pennsylvania.

The large group included both McNulty kids, at least one of Christine McLaughlin's kids, Cesar Escudero, Spencer Shaak, Genesis Wentzel, several other members of both Wyomissing and Exeter High School chess teams, Joe Mucerino, and myself.

Results that I know:  Genesis scored 4 / 5 in the K-12 Under 1000 section and won a medal.  Spencer scored 2.5 / 5 in the Carlisle Open Under 1500 section.  I scored 4.5 / 5 in the Open section, good for sole possession of 2nd place.  Winning the tournament with a perfect 5-0 score in the Open section was Joe Mucerino!  All results will be online when the tournament gets rated, which will likely happen sometime this week.

The winner and runner-up have tentatively agreed to meet on Friday March 12 to look over their games and possibly inform/entertain any other interested club members.  See you then!

-Peter Minear

P. S.  You might be able to prove, even without a math Ph. D., that Joe (5 / 5) and I (4.5 / 5) did not face each other in this touranment.
